Coaching
A mentor often gives you the benefit of their experience
A mentor has usually traveled some version of the road you're trying to travel.
You might ask:
How did you raise your first round?
How did you become a CMO?
How did you handle this stage of building a company?
What would you do in my position?
A good mentor can share experience, advice, introductions, mistakes, and perspective.
Sometimes that's exactly what you need.
A coach isn't there simply to tell you what to do
Coaching is different.
A coach helps you slow down the problem, understand what's actually happening, challenge assumptions, identify patterns, and get clearer about what you want to do.
That distinction matters because sometimes advice isn't the problem.
You already have plenty of advice.
You may have ten smart people telling you ten different things.
What you don't have is clarity about which answer is right for you.
When a mentor may be the better fit
I'd look for a mentor when you need experience that's highly specific to the path you're pursuing.
Maybe you're entering an industry they've spent twenty years in.
Maybe they've built exactly the type of company you're building.
Maybe you need tactical guidance from someone who has already solved the problem.
That's where mentorship can be incredibly valuable.
When coaching may be the better fit
Coaching can be especially useful when the challenge is less about how and more about what.
Should I stay?
Do I want to keep being CEO?
What do I want next?
Why do I keep getting stuck here?
You may not need someone to hand you an answer.
You need someone who can help you find yours.
Sometimes you need both
There's no rule saying you have to choose.
At different stages of my career, I've benefited from people who gave me direct advice and people who gave me space to think.
The important thing is knowing which conversation you're trying to have.
If you need tactical expertise, find someone who knows the terrain.
If you need clarity, accountability, perspective, or a place to work through a decision, working with a coach may be more useful.
And sometimes the best support comes from someone who understands the world you're operating in but doesn't assume their path should become yours.
You don’t need all the answers before you begin. We can start with a real conversation about what’s next.
